Had a friend over for dinner and thought the KB would be a nice pairing w/the chicken I was making. Man it was the perfect pairing!!! The earthyness of the mushrooms and green onions melded together w/the KB seemlessly. A classic 1+1=3 pairing!! Didn't want the night to end so popped my only bottle of Reynvaan. Ok folks........if you are not on the Cayuse list yet........RUN OUT AND GET ON THE REYNVAAN LIST!! In a blind tasting I think only the florals of the Reynvaan make me think it's slighty different from the Cayuse Cailloux. I raced through my three pack of 06 Cailloux and wish I had waited as they weren't ready yet. Well.......now I will drink my Reynvaan while I'm waiting for my Cayuse to age, haha!! Sssoooo good!! But honestly I think these will just get better and better w/time.

2007 Kosta Browne Pinot Noir Sonoma Coast - USA, California, Sonoma County, Sonoma Coast (11/16/2009)
this baby was hitting on all cylinders last night and was the perfect pairing for chicken brushed w/dijon topped with butter, soy and sauted mushrooms and green onions. The earthy flavors of the food were a dream match w/the forest floor, mushrooms, tart strawberries, perfect pepper, baking spices, cedar and balanced acids of the wine. Elegant and just a beautiful wine. A friend was talking about not picking this up next year.......yeah........I will get more for sure!! (94 pts.)

2007 Reynvaan Family Vineyards Syrah In the Rocks - USA, Washington, Columbia Valley, Walla Walla Valley (11/16/2009)
Was just gonna have a glass of this w/a friend and then taste the rest over the week to see how it evolved.....yeah....that didn't happen! This wine is so in my wheel house and of course is basically a Cayuse cousin. Was a lil cold coming out of the wine fridge but as it warmed up it was a cornicopia of aromas and flavors. Beautiful bouquet of light pineapple, fresh flowers, cured meats, cabbage, cherries galore and minerals that attack the finish. Has that familiar light saline mouthfeel that is remincent of Cayuse wines. It's almost subtle but very complexed. This would really give the Cayuse Cailloux a run for it's money and definitely is drinking better in it's youth! But this wine still has a little baby fat to shed and could benefit from some cellar time to meld everything together. This could easily be bumped up a few points in the future! (93 pts.)

Futures are $45 for the In the Rocks and $50 for the Contender. They bump them $5 after that. Not cheap but similar pricing to Cayuse. Worth it in my opinion.

“The Contender”™ Syrah $55.00 *
“In the Rocks”™ Syrah $45.00 *
“The Unnamed” Syrah $40.00 *

For the 08 Futures, Will be placing my order whenever I pay off my last trips purchases. Man those are huge bottles, I got mine in today and they really eat cellar space. Plus I almost pulled my back out, again lifting those beasts. Going to break out "The Contender" at the next vayniac offline just to show the other people how good these wines are.

Anyone looking to find 2007 Reynvaan Syrah's should google Avalon wines...they are a little high in price and shipping is crazy...but if you can't find the wines anywhere else...it's a start. James clearly has an affinity for this wine. It sound like one hell of a bargain compared to secondary market prices on Cayuse.

Both McCarthy and Schiering's has them in the Seattle area. The Reynvaan's are spectacular wines. While they resemble Cayuse, they are their own wines and I find them to be just a tad bit more understated, but delicious nonetheless.

James,
Aren't you glad I turned you on to theses puppies?? :)

Great notes by the way. You and D need to head this way after the first of the year for another blowout...

YES I AM!! I love their wine and thought it was the only ones that could stand up to Cayuse after their tasting!

Bump...I called Avalon today. They have less than a case left of the Reynvaan wines...anyone wanting to try the 2007's (supposed to be a great vintage!) before they are gone forever had better Jump! James...are you stocking any more in your cellar after tasting the wines?

  • 2007 Reynvaan Family Vineyards Syrah In the Rocks - USA, Washington, Columbia Valley, Walla Walla Valley (4/9/2010)
Color: A transluscent Violet with a light ruby rim

Smell: Earth, smoke, violets, black pepper, olives, and sweet oak

Taste: Faint vanilla leads into blackberries, blueberries, licorice, and bloody meat.

Overall: A very well made wine that offers structure and a clear "new world" frame without being over the top or feeling uber-extracted. This is a very elegant Syrah that reminds me what it is I truly love about this grape. There can be power and elegence in the same wine that will stand up well to a simple grilled steak or could easily support many vegitarian dishes...well done (91 pts.)
